With bicycle theft growing at an alarming rate, a good cycle lock is an absolutely essential purchase for any cyclist. Here are our top 10 tips for buying and using a cycle lock.

1. If possible, spend at least 10 % of the value of your bike on a good quality lock.
2. Consider the locks from reputable brands such as Abus or Kryptonite.
3. Look for Sold Secure accredited locks: Bronze, Silver or ideally Gold.
4. Where possible, use two locks of different types and different makes.
5. Never leave an unattended bike unlocked, even if you are only leaving it for a few moments.
6. Always lock your bike to a sold, immovable object.
7. Use a ground anchor or wall anchor to provide a secure locking point at your home.
8. Always position the lock through both the frame and both of the wheels.
9. Try to leave your bike in a well lit, public place, where potential thieves wouldn’t go unnoticed.
